filedone edits documents. The same ability that fixes a date on a poster can forge a date on a certificate, so these rules say what the tools will not do and what you must not do with them. Most of them are enforced by software before an edit runs, not by trust; the rest are conditions of using the service, and breaking them has the consequences listed at the end.
Documents we will not edit or generate
An automated classifier examines every document before an edit. If it recognises one of the classes below, the edit is refused — at any price, on any plan — and the refusal names what you can still do instead. On every one of these classes you can still extract the text or tables, redact parts, or translate it, because reading a document does not make a false one.
- Government identity documents — Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, national IDs and similar.
- Passports.
- Driving licences and other official licences and registration certificates.
- Currency and banknotes — not edited, not generated, not restyled.
- Any document carrying an official seal or stamp.
- Court and police documents — orders, summons, FIRs, charge sheets, warrants.
- Medical prescriptions and medical records.
- Degrees, mark sheets and transcripts from real boards and universities.
- Certificates — not edited; generating one from a template will need a verified organisation and a visible "sample" mark, and that is not open yet.
- Photos of people — we do not generate a person, and we do not alter the region of an image that shows a person (see below).
Invoices, quotations and receipts are not refused: you can edit them and make new ones.
Bank statements and payslips are not refused today. The classifier recognises them and the edit is allowed, but it is logged with the document class, and using the tools to change an amount, a date or a name on one in order to misrepresent income or funds is document fraud, is forbidden by these rules, and is traceable through the file's fingerprint for a year. The same is true of a document the classifier could not identify: the edit runs, and you remain responsible for what it is. We review these decisions and may close them.
Images of people
- Faces in a design are detected and protected: no edit touches the region that shows a person. On a wedding card the couple's photograph is preserved pixel for pixel while the date changes.
- When a face is detected you must confirm, for that job, that you have the right to use the image and the consent of the people in it. The confirmation is logged.
- Sexual, intimate or graphically violent imagery involving a real person is refused, and asking for it is a breach of these rules.
- You may not use the tools to make deceptive content depicting public figures, uniforms, insignia, political symbols or someone else's brand, or to impersonate anyone.
What you may not do
Do not upload, or use the tools to make, anything that:
- is a false document or a false electronic record, or is meant to be passed off as genuine;
- belongs to someone else and you have no right to;
- infringes a copyright, trademark or other right;
- impersonates another person, or deceives about the origin of a message;
- is obscene, pornographic, invasive of another person's privacy, or harmful to a child;
- threatens the unity, security or sovereignty of India, public order, or friendly relations with other states, or incites an offence;
- is knowingly false or misleading in a way that could cause harm;
- contains malware, or is designed to get around the classifier, the quotas, the rate limits or the labels;
- is otherwise unlawful where you are or where the result will be used.
This list follows the categories in rule 3(1)(b) of India's IT Rules 2021, in plain words.
The warning the law requires us to give
Using a tool that generates or alters content to break the law can attract penalty or punishment under, among others, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the Information Technology Act 2000, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012, the Representation of the People Act 1951 and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986. If you do, we may refuse the job, withdraw and block the file, close your account, disclose your identity to a victim who complains where the law requires it, and report the offence to the appropriate authority. We keep the fingerprint of every file processed, and the automated decision about it, for one year so that we can.
How AI outputs are labelled
- Images (PNG, JPEG, WebP — including re-edited designs, background removal and upscaling done on our servers): provenance metadata (XMP and a signed C2PA manifest) with a unique identifier, and, where the image allows it, an imperceptible watermark designed to survive a screenshot. They carry no visible mark on the image itself.
- PDFs: the same provenance metadata with a unique identifier and a signed C2PA record delivered beside the file. No page carries a visible mark, including pages rebuilt from a scan.
- Because the file itself shows no mark, the tool page and the result say in words that the output was made or edited with AI. If it shows a real person, place or event, tell anyone you pass it to.
- AI tools that run in your browser: the visible mark and the metadata, but no cryptographic signature, because no signing key can live in a browser. The tool page says so.
- Our provenance signature is self-issued today, so a verifier shows the signer as unknown; it still proves the file has not changed since we signed it.
- There is no option to remove the label, on any plan or at any price; the configuration refuses to load with one. Removing or obscuring it yourself is a breach of these rules and, in India, of the IT Rules on synthetically generated information.
Fair use of the free tier
Without an account you can use the tools that run entirely in your browser; every tool that uses credits needs an account. With an account you get 20 credits once. Creating accounts to collect the bundle repeatedly, sharing an account, running automated traffic, or using data-centre networks to evade the daily limits is not allowed and costs you the bundle, the allowance, or the account.
What happens when a rule is broken
- A refused edit is refused with a message naming the class and what you can still do. It costs no credits.
- A file that is reported is withdrawn from download and its fingerprint blocked automatically, before a person reviews the report.
- Repeated attempts on refused classes, or any of the conduct above, can lead to the account being suspended or closed.
- Where the law requires it, we disclose and report as described above.
- Every one of these decisions can be appealed through the grievance officer, who reads the logged record and answers in writing.
We remind account holders of these rules at least once every three months, and we may change them; the date at the top is the version in force.
