How to make a passport size photo online

  1. Choose what the photo is for: an Indian passport or visa, a US or UK passport, a Schengen visa, or a form such as PAN. The official page each size comes from is named under the picker.
  2. Pick a selfie taken straight on, in good light, in front of a plain wall if you can. Your face is found, the photo is cut to the size and the background is filled with the colour the rule asks for.
  3. Tick the box to say it is your photo, or one you were asked to make, and download the photo and a print sheet for 4×6 in photo paper or A4.

What this tool does

Choose what the photo is for — an Indian passport or visa, a US or UK passport, a Schengen visa, or a form such as PAN — and pick a selfie taken straight on in good light. In your browser tab, a small face finder locates your face, and the photo is cut to the rule's size with your head the size the rule asks for and centred. A second model, the one our background remover uses, finds your outline so the background can be filled with plain white (or the colour the rule asks for); nothing in the picture is generated and your face is not retouched. Tick the box to say it is your photo, or one you were asked to make, and press the button: you get the photo itself, and sheets of copies to print on 4×6 in photo paper or A4. Every size comes from the official page named under the picker, but rules change and this tool does not certify anything — check the current rule before you apply. No watermark is added, and the original's EXIF data is removed.

If this image shows a real person, the result is an AI-manipulated image of that person. It is labelled as AI-edited in its metadata, and you are responsible for having their consent.

The sizes it makes

Each size is read from the official page named under the picker, on the date shown there; rules change, so check the current one before you apply. The head size is measured from the chin to the top of the head.

What our sample photo became

Our sample is a drawn person in front of a bookshelf, not a photo of anyone: a 328,731-byte JPEG. Made into an Indian passport photo by the code this page runs, it came out at 35 × 45 mm, 413 × 531 pixels at 300 dpi, a 38.2 KB JPEG on plain white, with print sheets of 8 photos on 4×6 in and 30 on A4. The face finder and the outline model ran on the computer, not on a server.

What this tool cannot do

It sizes and aligns a photo and fills the background; it does not certify that an office will accept it. An officer also judges what a tool cannot fix.

What happens to your file

Your file never leaves your device. This page opens it, changes it and saves the result in your browser; nothing is uploaded, so there is no copy on our servers to delete.

No AI provider sees it either. The page sends us one count that a run happened — no file, no name, no size. Details on the privacy page.

Questions

Does my photo get uploaded?

No. The photo is opened, measured, cut and saved inside your browser tab; there is no copy on our servers. The face finder (about 230 KB) and the outline model (about 26 MB) are downloaded to your browser once and run there. The only thing the page sends us is a count that a run happened — no picture, no name, no size.

Will it be accepted?

The size, the head size and the background follow the official rule named under the picker, checked on the date shown. But rules change, and an office also judges things a tool cannot — the light, your expression, glasses, a recent likeness. This tool sizes and aligns the photo; it does not certify it. Check the current rule before you apply.

Is the background changed by AI?

A model that runs in your browser works out which pixels are you, and everything else is filled with one flat colour. Nothing is generated, and your face is not retouched. Because a model was involved, the file's metadata records that it was AI-edited; no visible mark is added. The UK asks for a photo unaltered by software, so for the UK your own background is kept unless you choose a colour under "More options".

How do I print it?

Download the print sheet: a 4×6 in sheet (8 photos at 35 × 45 mm) that any photo shop prints for the price of one photo, or an A4 sheet for your own printer, with thin lines to cut along. Print at 100 % ("actual size"), not "fit to page". Passport Seva asks for a print on photo paper, not a computer print.

Can I make a photo of someone else?

Only if they asked you to — a child, a parent, a friend who sent you their selfie. The page asks you to confirm that before it runs. It never adds clothes, changes a face or makes one up.
