What this tool does

Choose a PDF of up to 50 MB and 300 pages, tap where the number goes on a small picture of its first page — top or bottom; left, centre or right — and pick how it reads: "1", "Page 1", "Page 1 of 12" or "1 / 12". Under More options you can start from another number, change the text size and the distance from the edge, and leave the first page (a cover) without a number while it still counts. The numbers are placed on each page as it is shown, so a landscape or sideways page is numbered upright where you asked. They are drawn in black Helvetica on the pages themselves; nothing else on the page changes, and the file's links, bookmarks and fillable fields keep working. The numbered PDF is made as soon as the file is read and again after every change. Everything happens in your browser with a PDF library that downloads to your device when you choose the file: nothing is uploaded, and there is no AI in it.

What happens to your file

Your file never leaves your device. This page opens it, changes it and saves the result in your browser; nothing is uploaded, so there is no copy on our servers to delete.

No AI provider sees it either. The page sends us one count that a run happened — no file, no name, no size. Details on the privacy page.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The numbers are added by your browser, on your device, with pdf-lib, a PDF library downloaded from this site when you choose the file. The only thing we are told is that a run happened — not the file, its name or its pages.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Yes. Tick "No number on the first page" under More options. The cover still counts, so the second page reads 2; set the first number to 0 if you want it to read 1.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set "First number" under More options — to 25, say, when this PDF continues another one — and "Page 1 of 10" becomes "Page 25 of 34".

Will the numbers be right on landscape or sideways pages?

Yes. Each number is placed on the page as a reader shows it, after the page's own turn, so "bottom centre" is the bottom centre on screen and the digits read the right way up there.

What else changes in the file?

Only the numbers are drawn, in black Helvetica at the size and distance from the edge you choose. The text stays selectable, and links, bookmarks and fillable form fields keep working. There is no watermark; the PDF's metadata records that it was made at filedone.ai with no AI involved.
