How to merge PDF files into one

  1. Choose two or more PDFs, up to 20, each up to 50 MB and 300 pages. They open in this browser tab and are never uploaded.
  2. Drag them into order, or use the arrows. Under a file, "Choose pages" takes only some of its pages, such as 1-3, 5.
  3. Download the merged PDF. It is made as soon as two files are in, and again after every change.

Before and after

Two PDFs in, one PDF out.

Two PDFs
A one-page cover note and
a two-page newsletter.
One PDF
Three pages, in the order chosen:
the note first, then the newsletter.

What this tool does

Choose up to 20 PDFs, each up to 50 MB and 300 pages, and this page makes one PDF of them in the order shown: drag a file up or down, or use its arrows, and remove one with its cross. Under each file, "Choose pages" takes only some of its pages — type 1-3, 5 — and every page is taken until you do. The merged file is made as soon as two PDFs are in, and again after every change. Each page is copied as it is, with its text, pictures and size, and a link from one page to another page of the same file still works. Everything happens in your browser with a PDF library that downloads to your device when you choose the files: nothing is uploaded. There is no AI in it and no mark on your pages; the PDF's metadata records that it was made at filedone.ai, with no AI involved.

What merging our sample files made

A merged PDF is about the size of its parts added together, because every page is copied as it is, with its text, pictures and size; nothing is re-compressed. To make the result smaller, compress it afterwards.

What carries over, and what does not

The pages carry over exactly; some of the files' extras do not. Check this list before you merge a file whose bookmarks or form fields you still need.

Merge, organize or extract?

Merge puts whole files, or chosen pages of them, one after another. To reorder, turn or delete pages inside one PDF, use Organize PDF pages; to copy some pages into a new PDF, use Extract pages. All three run in your browser.

What happens to your file

Your file never leaves your device. This page opens it, changes it and saves the result in your browser; nothing is uploaded, so there is no copy on our servers to delete.

No AI provider sees it either. The page sends us one count that a run happened — no file, no name, no size. Details on the privacy page.

Questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. The PDFs are merged by your browser, on your device, with pdf-lib, a PDF library downloaded from this site when you choose the files. The only thing we are told is that a run happened — not the files, their names or how many there were.

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

Up to 20, each up to 50 MB and 300 pages. To merge more, merge the first 20 and then merge that file with the rest.

Can I take only some pages from a file?

Yes. Open "Choose pages" under the file and type the pages you want, such as 1-3, 5; the others are left out of the merged PDF. The pages keep their own order; to put pages in a new order, merge first and then use Organize PDF pages.

Can I merge a PDF that has a password?

Not until it is unlocked. That includes a PDF that opens without a password but is locked against changes by its owner: the page names it, and nothing is merged until you remove it or replace it with an unlocked copy.

Is there a watermark, and what else changes?

No mark is drawn on any page. Every page keeps its text, pictures and size, and links between pages of the same file keep working. Bookmarks, attached files and the files' own title and author are not carried over, and fillable form fields keep what they show but can no longer be filled in. The PDF's metadata records that it was made at filedone.ai with no AI involved.
