How to edit a scanned PDF without retyping it

Upload the scan to a scanned-PDF editor and say what should change, for example "change 12 March to 14 March". The page is read with OCR, only the words you named are painted out, and the new words are drawn in a font matched to the ink. Everything else stays the original scan, so there is nothing to retype.

Edit a scanned PDF in four steps

  1. Open the scanned editorGo to Edit the text in a scanned PDF and choose your PDF, or a JPG or PNG photo of the page. Sign in if you have not; accounts are free.
  2. Say what should changeType one plain instruction naming the old words and the new ones, such as "change the rent from ₹18,500 to ₹19,000". Exact old words find the right line fastest.
  3. Check the price, then run itThe price is shown before anything runs: 8 credits a job for up to 10 pages. Nothing is charged for a run that does not finish.
  4. Compare and downloadLook at the before-and-after view of each changed line, adjust it if it needs it, and download the PDF. Only the changed lines are new; every other pixel is your scan.

Why retyping is the usual answer, and why you can skip it

Most advice for editing a scan is to run OCR, convert the page to Word or to editable text, fix it and save it again. That rebuilds the whole page: fonts are swapped for the nearest available ones, line breaks move, and the stamp, the letterhead and the paper texture are lost or flattened into an image. For a one-word change, that is a lot of page to put back together.

Patching keeps the page. Each changed line becomes a small patch laid over the scan: the old ink is removed by filling in the paper from what is around it, and the new words are drawn at the size, weight and slope of the ink that was there. The page image underneath is not re-encoded.

Free alternatives, and what they cost you

If a visible white box is acceptable — on a plain white page, say — Add text to a PDF lets you white out a word and type over it for free, in your browser. If you only need the text, Scanned PDF to text reads it for free and nothing is uploaded.

What happens to the file

The scan is uploaded for the edit and deleted from our servers after 2 hours, whether or not you download the result. It is not used to train anything. The edited PDF says in its metadata that it was edited with AI, with a signed provenance manifest beside it; there is no visible mark on the page.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs on the web page in any modern browser, on a phone or a computer. You need a free account because each run costs credits; new accounts get 20 credits.

Can I change several things at once?

Yes, in one instruction — "change the date to 14 March and the amount to ₹2,450" — or one after another on the same page. One job covers up to 10 pages.

Will it match the font?

It picks the nearest matching font from its library and sets it at the size and colour of the ink on the page. On a typed or printed page the match is usually close; an unusual display face may be matched only approximately.

Is there a scan I can practise on?

Yes: the sample scanned rental agreement has a coffee ring and a fold, and the sample scanned letter has an amount and a date to change. Both are fictional and free.
