Can you edit the text in a scanned PDF?

Yes, but not the way you edit a normal PDF. A scanned PDF is a picture of a page with no text in it, so a tool first reads the words with OCR. Then there are two ways to change them: convert the page into editable text, which changes its look, or paint out only the old words and draw the new ones in a matching font, leaving the rest of the scan untouched.

How to tell whether your PDF is scanned

  1. Try to select a wordOpen the PDF and drag across a line. If the words highlight one by one, the PDF has a text layer and an ordinary PDF editor can change it. If a whole box highlights, or nothing does, each page is a picture.
  2. Search for a word you can seePress Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and search for a word on the page. No match on a word you can read means there is no text layer.
  3. Pick the tool that fitsA PDF with text goes to Edit the text in a PDF. A scan goes to Edit the text in a scanned PDF, or through OCR first if you only need the words.

Why a scanned PDF cannot be edited like a normal one

A PDF made from a word processor stores letters: each word is a run of characters in a font at a position, so an editor can swap characters. A scanner or a phone camera stores pixels. The PDF is only a wrapper around one image per page, and there are no letters in it to change until something reads them.

That reading is OCR, optical character recognition. It turns the shapes of letters into text, with a position for each word. Everything that follows — searching, copying, editing — depends on how well that step went, and it goes worse on skewed, grainy, folded or low-resolution scans.

The two ways to change the words

Convert, then edit. OCR the whole page and rebuild it as editable text, in Word or in a PDF editor's own text boxes. You can then type freely, but the page is no longer your scan: the fonts become the nearest ones the software has, spacing shifts, stamps and handwriting may be dropped or turned into images, and every OCR mistake is now in the text.

Patch only what changes. Leave the scan as it is, paint out the few words that must change by filling in the paper behind them, and draw the new words in a font matched to the ink, at the same size and slope. Nothing else on the page is re-encoded. This is what filedone's scanned editor does; it suits a date, an amount or a name, not rewriting a whole page.

What filedone does, and what it will not do

Edit the text in a scanned PDF takes a scan or a phone photo of a page and one instruction such as "change 12 March 2026 to 14 March 2026". It costs 8 credits a job, covering up to 10 pages, and you see the price before it runs. You need a free account; new accounts get 20 credits.

It refuses some documents at any price: identity documents, passports, licences, currency, anything with an official seal or stamp, court papers, medical records and degrees or mark sheets from real institutions. The file it gives back says in its metadata that it was edited with AI.

If you only need the words out of the scan, that is free and stays on your device: Scanned PDF to text or Make a scanned PDF searchable. For a Word file, PDF to Word charges 1 credit for each scanned page.

Questions

Can Microsoft Word edit a scanned PDF?

Word opens a PDF by converting it into a Word document — the "convert, then edit" route. Microsoft's own help page says the result may not match the original page for page, that it works best on PDFs that are mostly text, and that a copier-made manuscript will not be formatted well in Word.

Is there a free way to edit a scanned PDF?

To get the text out, yes: free OCR tools, including filedone's Scanned PDF to text, run in the browser. To change the words while keeping the scan's look, filedone's scanned editor is a paid AI tool (8 credits a job). You can also cover a word with a white box and type over it with the free Add text to a PDF, which is quick but visible on coloured paper.

How do I know if a PDF is scanned?

Try to select a word or search for one with Ctrl+F. If you cannot select single words and the search finds nothing you can see on the page, it is a scan with no text layer.

Can I try it on a test file first?

Yes. The sample scanned PDF and the sample scanned letter are free, fictional and made for exactly this.
